Chapeaux! The hats of Queen Beatrix

Paleis Het Loo | 23 March 2017 t/m 23 March 2017 | past

Artbite: Chapeaux! The diadem of Queen Wilhelmina

In this Art-bite, Paul Rem explains via a portrait of Queen Wilhelmina how the use of a diadem compares with that of a hat or crown.

In a beautiful portrait belonging to the Paleis het Loo’s collection, Queen Wilhelmina is shown with a diadem on her head. The grandmother of Queen Beatrix, Queen Wilhelmina was queen of the Netherlands from 23 November 1890 to 4 September 1948. Wilhelmina considered Palace het Loo her favourite palace. In 1911, she commissioned the building of an additional floor for the Corps-de-Logis (the middle part of the palace). On the eastside of the palace various building were also built (which now act as office space). Due to these constructions, some of the palace’s original symmetry was lost. In World War II, the palace was occupied by German military. After the war, Queen Wilhelmina returned to live at the palace until she stepped down in 1948.
