From 8 March 2018 until 3 June 2018, the Rijksmuseum features the special High Society exhibition. Never before have there been so many portrait paintings by famous artists in one exhibition.
The Rijksmuseum will present High Society from 8 March to 3 June 2018. Thirty-nine life-size portraits of mighty rulers, eccentric aristocrats and extremely rich citizens by the great masters of art history, including Cranach, Veronese, Velázquez, Reynolds, Gainsborough, Sargent, Munch and Manet. Rembrandt’s Marten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit are the brilliant centerpieces. The spectacular wedding portfolios have been restored and are shown to the public for the first time at the High Society exhibition. Never before has an exhibition been devoted to this most glamorous portrait type: life-sized, standing and full-length. Loans come from museums and private collections from Paris, London, Florence, Vienna and Los Angeles, among others.
High Society also gives a glimpse into the informal life of the well-to-do. More than eighty prints and drawings from the Rijksmuseum collection show what often took place behind closed doors: parties, drinking, gambling and amorous encounters.
