Brief history of Biesbosch MuseumEiland
The museum opened its doors to visitors in 1994. Back then, the Biesbosch MuseumEiland consisted of nine hexagonal pavilions. In 2001, two more were built. Plans were drawn up for extending the museum, because the area was being de-polderized. This led to a 1,000 m2expansion of the museum building.
In January 2016, the building was nominated for ArchDaily’s 2016 Building of the Year award, one of the most well-known architectural websites in the world. In April 2016, the building won three Architizer Awards. It was awarded the jury prize in the museum category, the architecture and landscape category. In the latter, it also won the audience award. The building also won the 2016 Tdea-Tops Award in the Green Architecture category.
It’s not just the building that’s beautiful, the MuseumEiland is very unique as well. Here, you can experience the special characteristics of the Biesbosch on a different scale. The creek, for instance, has been designed so you can clearly see the differences in water level. Children can play with the sluices,, so they can experience how ebb and flow can influence the area. A visit to the Biesbosch MuseumEiland in Werkendam is a great experience for everyone!
